What dampened market sentiment? Here are five factors

Rupee at record low: A falling rupee weighed heavy on investor sentiment. The local currency plunged to its fresh record low of 73.77 against the dollar early Thursday.

Boiling oil: Brent crude was trading over $86 per barrel in morning deals while WTI crude was above $76 per barrel.

Rising bond yields: Hardening bond yields are creating waves of panic in the domestic equity market. India’s 10-year bond yield was hovering above 8.18 per cent on Thursday against previous close of 8.11 per cent.

Foreign capital outflows: Investors remained concerned over sustained foreign money outflows as foreign portfolio investors offloaded shares worth Rs 455.02 crore in October so far.

Weak Asian cues: Subdued Asian markets spoiled market sentiment too. Japan's Nikkei edged lower in choppy trade on Thursday morning.

YES Bank shares continue to tumble, drop nearly 10%

Yes Bank stock has crashed more than 50 percent in last one month wiping out more than Rs 4,600 crore in market capitalisation. It fell as much as 9 percent on Friday to hit fresh 52-week low of Rs 184.45.

It was quoting at Rs 189.30, down Rs 13.90, or 6.84 percent, on the BSE at 10:50 hours IST.

It has been the biggest loser among Nifty50 stocks in last one month.

In the dock for under-reporting bad loans, Yes Bank has denied any “window dressing” of corporate loans to conceal its non-performing asset (NPA) status.

Yes Bank further said its gross NPA ratios are among the finest in the banking industry and the internal control over financial planning is audited with BSR and Co (KPMG), that has given an “un-qualified opinion” on it.

The Indian government on Wednesday hiked import duty on high-end consumer items

The Indian government on Wednesday hiked import duty on high-end consumer items including washing machines, air conditioner, footwear, diamonds, jet fuel as a part stabalise currency and to reduce current account deficit (CAD).

“The government has chosen consumer goods over capital ones, banking on the robust and resilient consumption growth over the past year. Given these are a small share of overall imports, the measures would help reduce imports by only USD 500 million (0.1% of total imports), which is quite small,”

10 key takeaways from Supreme Court's Aadhaar verdict

A five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, ruled that Aadhaar will stay, but with conditions.

The Supreme Court delivered its judgment on the petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act. A five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, ruled that Aadhaar will stay, but with conditions.

The verdict on the case was reserved by a constitutional bench earlier this year. Justice Sikri read out the majority verdict.

Here are the 10 key takeaways from the judgment:
1. It is no longer required to link your Aadhaar card to phone numbers and bank accounts. The Supreme Court struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act, which means that private companies cannot insist on Aadhaar details of customers.

2. The Supreme Court has ruled that the Aadhaar card has to be mandatorily linked to one’s PAN card. SC upheld the 139AA of Income Tax Act. It is mandatory to quote Aadhaar/Enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of return of income.

3. The SC struck down Section 33 (2) of the Aadhaar Act, which permits disclosure of identity information and authentication records for national security.

4. Aadhaar is not mandatory for school admission, Justice Sikri said while reading out the judgment. CBSE, UGC and NEET cannot make Aadhaar mandatory. Children will be given the option to opt out of Aadhaar benefits after becoming adults.

5. The purpose of the Aadhaar Act is legitimate but it is satisfied only if Aadhaar collects minimal data, Justice Sikri observed, and that adequate measures must be in place to protect data. Aadhaar eliminates any chance of duplication, he said.

6. Justice Sikri called the Aadhaar enrolment process foolproof but asked the central government to come up with a stronger data protection law as soon as possible.

7. Aadhaar empowers marginalised sections of society by giving them an identity, Justice Sikri said. The top court said many people benefiting from Aadhaar cannot be denied their rights due to exclusion of a few.

8. Justice Sikri said it is better to be unique than the best and Aadhaar is based on being unique. The architecture of the Aadhaar Act reveals that UIDAI is a statutory body for assigning unique numbers and authentication. Uniqueness is based on submission of demographic and biometric data submission to UIDAI, he said.

9. Justice Sikri said heavy reliance has been put on the privacy judgment of 2017 and that human dignity is already a settled right from an individual’s point of view. He added that profiling is not possible using Aadhaar and that sufficient safeguards are in place to disallow it.

10. The Supreme Court said only an authority above Joint Secretary can take a call on sharing data. There has to be consultation between a secretary-level officer and a sitting or retired judge to decide if data is to be shared in national interest.

Asian shares hover below 3-week high as Fed rate hike looms

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was almost flat in early trade, in part as South Korea is closed for a holiday. It stayed below a three-week high hit on Friday.

Asian shares barely budged on Wednesday, lacking traction as US bond yields edged near a seven-year peak ahead of a widely expected rate hike by the Federal Reserve and as international oil prices rose to four-year highs.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to as high as 3.113 percent, near its seven-year peak of 3.128 percent touched on May 18.

The euro traded at $1.1765, not far from three-month high of $1.18155 touched on Monday.

Oil prices slipped following data showing US crude stocks rose unexpectedly last week and renewed call from Trump on OPEC to boost crude output.

Still they were supported on the whole on concerns of tight supply on US sanctions on Iran's oil exports.

Benchmark Brent futures hit USD 82.55 per barrel, its highest since Nov. 10, 2014, on Tuesday and last stood at USD 81.41, down 0.55 percent on the day.

US crude futures shed 0.6 percent to USD 71.87 per barrel after hitting an 11-week high of USD 72.78 the previous day.
