Nikkei hits 27-year high on strong dollar, Wall Street gains

Japan's Nikkei stock index rose as high as 24,286.10 points, reaching its highest levels since November 1991, on renewed optimism about the global economy and hopes of a boost to exporters' earnings from a weaker yen. It was last up 1.5 percent.

Japan's Nikkei hit a 27-year high on Friday, taking heart from a boost for the dollar after the Federal Reserve chairman said he did not expect a near-term recession, and strong gains on Wall Street overnight.

Shares elsewhere in Asia also rose, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan adding 0.1 percent. Shares in China were higher ahead of a week-long national holiday. Blue chips gained 1.1 percent and the country's main Shanghai Composite index was 0.9 percent higher.

Australian shares rose 0.4 percent, while Seoul's Kospi gave up ground, falling 0.3 percent after hitting three-month highs on Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.21 percent to 26,439.93 on Thursday, the S&P 500 gained 0.28 percent to 2,914 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.65 percent to 8,041.97.

S&P E-mini futures rose 0.1 percent on Friday to 2,923.5.

U.S. crude was 0.2 percent higher at $72.28 a barrel. Brent crude was mostly flat at $81.73 per barrel.

Gold was slightly higher after tumbling 1 percent on Thursday on strength in the U.S. dollar, which made bullion more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

Asian shares hover below 3-week high as Fed rate hike looms

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was almost flat in early trade, in part as South Korea is closed for a holiday. It stayed below a three-week high hit on Friday.

Asian shares barely budged on Wednesday, lacking traction as US bond yields edged near a seven-year peak ahead of a widely expected rate hike by the Federal Reserve and as international oil prices rose to four-year highs.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to as high as 3.113 percent, near its seven-year peak of 3.128 percent touched on May 18.

The euro traded at $1.1765, not far from three-month high of $1.18155 touched on Monday.

Oil prices slipped following data showing US crude stocks rose unexpectedly last week and renewed call from Trump on OPEC to boost crude output.

Still they were supported on the whole on concerns of tight supply on US sanctions on Iran's oil exports.

Benchmark Brent futures hit USD 82.55 per barrel, its highest since Nov. 10, 2014, on Tuesday and last stood at USD 81.41, down 0.55 percent on the day.

US crude futures shed 0.6 percent to USD 71.87 per barrel after hitting an 11-week high of USD 72.78 the previous day.

Wall Street falls as US-China tariffs kick in

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 181.45 points, or 0.68 percent, to 26,562.05, the S&P 500 lost 10.3 points, or 0.35 percent, to 2,919.37, and the Nasdaq Composite added 6.29 points, or 0.08 percent, to 7,993.25.

The S&P 500 and the Dow closed lower on Monday after a new round of US-China trade tariffs kicked in, dampening last week's hopes for talks between the two countries, and as investors awaited a widely expected interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

Seven of the S&P's 11 major sectors lost ground after US tariffs on some USD 200 billion worth of Chinese goods took effect, along with Beijing's retaliatory duties.

The S&P 500 posted 18 new 52-week highs and three new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 43 new highs and 53 new lows.

About 6.96 billion shares changed hands on US exchanges compared with a 6.65 billion average for the last 20 sessions.
